some backstory first: I used to be in the classroom as a special education teacher (recently as high-level behavioral students), but I left at the end of then of the 2023-2024 school year after law changes and just some traumatic experiences. Now I work for a educational consulting company as a special education coordinator BUT this year has been almost all special education evaluations and dealing with the difficulties and struggles of that & not being able to do other parts of the job Now the largest part of the dream I remember: I was at the school I'm heading to right now to complete some special education academic testing. I was testing student when a different student who I know from discussions, observations, and testing from last year named Ashton come in. He is having a difficult time with his behavior. The staff at the school are basically at their end with this behavior because they have tried everything. He is disrupting my testing and starting to rip apart the room. I stop my testing and start some of my strategies of firm expectations, calming approach and just overall light restrictive procedures (eg a light bear hug) and he instantly stops. I'm holding him into me when my Autistm consultant comes in along with a different School Psych (now they both used to work from the same consultant companies -not mine- but it got bought out and the psych left for a different but the consultant went with the company that bought out company). I was shocked to see the Psych and I asked her how she was doing. She said she was good but frustrated about the "buy out but it was time after all the years". The Autism Consultant said something like "yeah it's okay with the company that bought us but I'm gonna keep looking over the summer." I said "I'm at my 2 year mark year and now I'm getting that itching feeling to get out. I know it's only 2 years but almost every 2 years I have moved jobs". The Autism Consultant asked Why and I responded with "I think I feel like I started to mess it up & I definitely feel like I started to overstep it here. The only place I did feel like I did mess up towards the end of 2 years but left on a sour note was my last classroom job" . Autism Consultant said "I get it, now this habit but also I feel like your boss just wants what is fair and equitable for everyone". I stated the same thing of "but you and I know ...there isn't enough time this year to complete another 2 evals. " then my alarm went off.
Dreams often reflect our subconscious thoughts, fears, desires, and experiences, combining them into narratives that might seem confusing or surreal. Let's explore the significant elements of your dream and what they might symbolize:
Revisiting the School Environment: The setting at a school for special education testing suggests an anchoring to your past experiences as a special education teacher. Although you've moved on to a different role, part of your subconscious is still attached to the hands-on nature of working directly with students.
Ashton’s Behavioral Episode: Ashton, a student you've worked with before, represents unresolved challenges or feelings from your past teaching experiences. His disruptive behavior and your successful intervention could symbolize your skills and expertise in handling difficult situations, as well as your ongoing concern for making a tangible impact.
Interruption and Resolution: The sequence with Ashton might also indicate a conflict between your past and present. You hold an ability to manage chaos effectively, yet there's an interruptive element (Ashton's behavior) that might parallel the frustrations in your current role—where your primary tasks (evaluations) diverge from your aspirations or other parts of the job you wish to explore.
Appearance of Former Colleagues: The Autism Consultant and the School Psychologist are figures associated with previous career transitions. Their presence signifies the influence of past professional connections and their opinions might reflect your own subconscious thoughts on job transitions and the influence of external changes on your career path.
Discussion of Career Longevity and Satisfaction: Your conversation about job tenures and the feeling of needing to move on might reveal an internal struggle with career stability and satisfaction. The recurring theme of moving every two years suggests uncertainty or restlessness and perhaps dissatisfaction in how you perceive your impact or growth in each role.
Perception of Overstepping: Feeling like you've "overstepped" could relate to a fear of reaching limits in your professional capacity or feeling inadequate despite your efforts. It might also highlight your self-critical nature, pondering whether your contributions matter in the grand scheme of your professional environment.
Company Buyouts and Uncertainty: The buyout discussion reflects concerns about changes in the organizational structure and how they affect you and your colleagues. This can symbolize worries about job security and alignment with your personal values and expectations within evolving professional landscapes.
Colleague’s Reassurance: The Autism Consultant’s comment on fairness and equity might reflect your own values and aspirations to achieve a balanced, meaningful career. This reassurance serves as a reminder of your dedication and the value you bring to your role, despite external challenges.
Unfinished Business: Your statement about not having enough time to complete evaluations mirrors feelings of being overwhelmed or insufficient time to fulfill responsibilities. This could signify anxiety over meeting expectations and balancing workload and job satisfaction.
Overall, your dream highlights recurrent themes of professional restlessness, competence in handling difficult situations, and anxiety over time constraints and career fulfillment. It encapsulates a journey of wanting to resolve past issues and navigate present challenges while seeking clarity about future steps. Reflecting on these emotions when awake may help guide decisions in your career and help address the underlying feelings that surfaced in your dream.
